Human Chondrocytes (HC) are derived from normal human articular cartilage. They are cryopreserved at the first passage and can be cultured and propagated at least 10 population doublings. Chondrocytes produce and maintain the extracellular matrix of cartilage1. These cells can be used for the repair of cartilage defects, such as osteoarthritis, through their limited mitotic capability2. They have served as models for studying chondrocyte differentiation and the effects of cytokines and growth factors on the suppression and maintenance of differentiated cartilage phenotype.

Human Fibroblast-Like Synoviocytes (HFLS) are isolated from synovial tissues obtained from patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). They are cryopreserved at second passage and can be cultured and propagated at least 10 population doublings. HFLS are long known for their role in joint destruction by producing cytokines and metalloproteinases that contribute to cartilage degradation1,2. Proinflammatory cytokines induce the proliferation, collagenase and aggrecanase production and GM-CSF secretion on HFLS3, 4. Ongoing arthritis research also has shown that HFLS express apoptosis and P53 mutations5, 6. We provide two types of HFLS that are useful cellular models for studying the differences between HFLS-RA and HFLS-OA, such as the expression and regulation of proteases7 and integrin subunits8.
